Istanbul: A Turkish court on Sunday ordered an Acrem Imamoglo, who is considered a major rival of Istanbul Mayor and President Rajab Tayyab Erdoan, to formally arrest and keep him in jail until hearing in corruption charges against him. This has created a ruckus in Türkiye. People have come out on the streets. Earlier, prosecutors in Türkiye requested for his formal arrest after Imamoglu was detained in allegations related to corruption and terrorism.

Political tension in the Turki has increased and there have been extensive protests across the country after Imamoglu was detained earlier this week. The protesters took out rallies in several cities to express their opposition. Many people believe that this arrest is politically motivated and this action has been taken so that Erdoan’s leading rival can be removed from the match in the 2028 presidential election.

5 hours questioned by Mayor Imamoglu

Government officials dismissed the allegation and said that the Turki courts are independent. According to the news of ‘Kumhuriyat’ newspaper, the police questioned Imamoglu on Saturday for about five hours. The inquiry was made under the investigation of allegations of assistance to the banned ‘Kurdistan Workers Party’ (PKK). A day earlier, he was questioned for four hours about allegations of corruption. The mayor dismissed all the allegations during interrogation. Later, he was taken to a court for questioning by prosecutors. Around 90 other people were also taken into custody with him for questioning.

Imamoglu is getting support for the presidency

The police detained Imamoglu after a raid on his house on Wednesday. The ‘Republican People’s Party’ (CHP) has started the ‘Primary’ election process to support Imamoglu as his presidential candidate despite this arrest. The party has also established symbolic ballots across the country so that those who are not members of the party can also express their support for the mayor. They have been named ‘solidarity boxes’. (AP)
