After just two races: Red Bull would like to get rid of the driver

In his previous two races for Red Bull, Liam Lawson performed very weak performance. His Formula 1 career could be over very quickly.

After a disappointing start to the Formula 1 season, Red Bull is apparently already thinking about a Liam Lawson outsourcing. This is reported by the “Motorsport.com” portal, citing sources in the paddock. According to this, Lawson could be replaced by Yuki Tsunoda for the Japan race in two weeks, who put a good start to the season in the Red Bull Sister team Racing Bulls.

Lawson received a regular place in Formula 1 over the course of last season when he replaced the weakening Daniel Ricciardo at the Racing Bulls. After appealing performances, Red Bull brought him to the main team for the new season – and gave him preference before the more experienced tsunoda.

But in the first two season races, Lawson presented himself overwhelmed with the difficult to drive Red Bull. At the first race in Australia, he only made it in 18th place in qualifying and slipped into the route boundary in the rainy race. At the race in China, he ended up in qualifying for the sprint race and the main race with partly around a second behind teammate Max Verstappen each. He ended the races with 14th and 15th place without World Cup points.

According to the “Motorsport.com” report, it is not yet certain that Lawson has to go again after only two races, but it is likely that the exchange with tsunoda would be.

Lawson himself recently pointed out that he still needed some time to get used to the Red Bull, but it was also clear: “Unfortunately I don’t really have time,” he said. Red Bulls Motor Sports Advisor Helmut Marko then only said: “He is right.” In an interview with the TV station Sky, Marko confirmed: “Formula 1 is competitive. Ultimately, it is what counts.” There he also indicated that it could get worse for Lawson. Marko emphasized that Red Bull also had other talented young drivers outside of Formula 1. It does not seem to be certain that Lawson can continue in the racing Bull at least.

In the past, they have already proven that Red Bull has not hesitated to exchange drivers during the season. Last year, Lawson replaced Ricciardo in Racing Bull and Pierre Gasly (now at Alpine) had to vacate the Red Bull seat for Alexander Albon after a few races.

This season is a second driver who, like world champion Max Verstappen, is particularly important for Red Bull to have a chance for the designer title. Because compared to the dominant past years, the racing team is fighting major problems this season. In the end, Verstappen in the rainy and chaotic Australia race was still able to fight second place, but in China even he had big problems with his car and only ended up in fourth place. The strong McLaren were also unreachable for him. A defense of the driver’s title should be so impossible for Verstappen.

That is why Red Bull already admitted a crisis meeting at the headquarters in Milton Keynes, English. “We are concerned, but it’s not that we would throw the shotgun into the grain,” said motorsport consultant Marko at Sky. Until there is technical improvements, the goal must be to “take as many points as possible,” continued the Austrian. So a new driver could soon be sitting in the Red Bull.
