The city of Sumy in Ukraine experienced one of the heaviest Russian air raids. The horror is internationally great – and probably the future Chancellor Merz finds clear words.

Berlin – Probably future Chancellor Friedrich Merz accused Russian President Vladimir Putin after the rocket strike against the city of Sumy in the northeast of Ukraine. “This is clearly a war crime, a serious war crime,” said the CDU chairman in the ARD program “Caren Miosga”.

“That was just a part of what happened there today,” Merz explained. “There were two waves of attack, and the second came when the helpers tried to make the victims. This is no longer to be beaten in perfidia. And that is specific and wanted a serious war crime.”

More than 30 deaths in Russian rocket strike against Sumy

In the Russian air strike with ballistic rockets against the city of Sumy, more than 30 people died on Palm Sunday. More than 100 civilians were injured. Two children are also among the dead, said President Wolodymyr Selenskyj near Telegram. There were 34 deaths, the authorities said. There are also 15 children among the 117 injuries.

Merz continued: “I once say to everyone who ask Naiv Putin in Germany to get to the conference table: that is the answer. This is what Putin does to those who talk to him about a ceasefire.” Obviously Putin interpreted the willingness to talk to him, not as a serious offer to enable peace, but as a weakness.

In his time as an opposition politician, Merz had opened to Ukraine for the delivery of Taurus marching aircraft. When asked whether this still applies, he said in the ARD: “Yes, I said it just as I meant. Not that we intervene in this war ourselves, but that we are equipping the Ukrainian army with such weapons.” When asked, Merz added that he had always said that he would only do so in coordination with the European partners. “This has to be coordinated, and if it is coordinated, then Germany should participate.” dpa
