The application developed by Google cannot be installed by the end user. It was designed to be added directly by the manufacturers, during the software design of the vehicle. Once in place, it allows you to record what the exterior cameras see, without additional equipment.
Certain events, such as very sudden braking, automatically trigger a recording. But the driver can also launch the capture manually, via a command in the on -board interface. The sequences are then stored on an SD card, if the vehicle has one, or in a space provided for this purpose. This operation avoids cluttering central memory, often reserved for system functions.
The videos are classified by date, and accompanied by information such as the time or, if available, the GPS contact details. The manufacturer can modify these parameters. He can also decide to add other triggers, change the appearance of the interface or review the duration of the recorded sequences.
Technically, the application works with EVS or camera2 APIs, depending on the components chosen by the manufacturer. The tool is provided with precise documentation, which explains how to adapt it to different types of cameras and systems. The whole is accessible on Github.
Google does not force any manufacturer to use it as is. The interest of the project is based on this freedom of adaptation. Each brand can use it as a basis to develop its own service, or only resume certain elements. It is not a final product, but a solution ready to be enriched.
