Germany provides Ukraine another billion euros. Chancellor Scholz had previously stopped help because of the German budget situation.
The Bundestag’s budget committee has given the green light for the billion-dollar package with additional military aid for Ukraine. The specialist politicians approved a submission of the federal government in Berlin, as participants in the meeting of the German Press Agency confirmed.
The package is about an additional three billion euros for this year and up to 8.3 billion euros for the years 2026 to 2029.
There had been long conflicts before the Bundestag election. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) wanted to use an exceptional regulation of the debt brake. In contrast, Union, FDP and the Greens – Scholz ‘remaining coalition partners – wanted to finance the arms deliveries through a so -called over -planned output in the household.
The Ukraine package is now to be financed through such an issue. The prerequisite for this path is the historic billion dollar credite package for defense, infrastructure and climate protection. It provides for a loosening of the debt brake for defense spending. The Bundestag and the Federal Council approved the package.
A spokesman for Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) said in Berlin that a significant proportion of support services could be delivered this year. He spoke in Berlin of the Iris-T air defense system, steering air bodies, surveillance radar, drones, combat vehicles and hand weapons. He also said that the support of Ukraine had to be thought of for the following years. According to government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, the previous German Ukraine aids have been in more than 44 billion euros since the beginning of the Russian robbery.
The Greens chief housekeeper Sven-Christian Kindler told the German press agency with a view to Chancellor Scholz that it was good that the incumbent Federal Chancellor had finally solved his blockade. “After the historical financial package for more security, climate protection and investments, we now show in parliament that we are serious about defending freedom in Ukraine. People in Ukraine need protection against the brutal bombs of the Russian dictator.”
In the letter from the Ministry of Finance to the Budget Committee, it is said that a strong and constant wear and tear of the material of the Ukrainian armed forces and the military situation urgently required the fastest possible material support from Ukraine.
It also says that for the needs-based equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces with material and weapons, mainly in the areas of air defense, protective and special equipment, pollution ability, drones, protected vehicles, armored shadows, combat tanks and rifle tanks, numerous further procurement contracts would have to be completed “immediately” in the first half of 2025.
The continuous increase in the number of drones used by Russia is increasingly overloading the capacities of Ukrainian air defense. “In addition, imponderables and uncertainties with regard to the continuation of the US support services have been created to date, which make military planning and logistics more difficult and to reflect in an increased need for support.”
Defense Minister Pistorius had requested a quick solution to the aid package. He said two weeks ago at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umjerow in Berlin, if the financing succeeded, the delivery of further air defense systems with steering flight bodies is possible. In addition, Germany can also strengthen the skills of the Ukrainian land forces with additional artillery systems – the Panzerhaubitzen 2000 and the new RCH 155 wheel shadows.
