Where does the term “quiz” come from?

The word “quiz” comes from English. There are different theories about the exact origin of the word. A rather unlikely theory goes back to the Irish theater director Richard Daly. This is said to have bet of being able to add a new word to the English language and invented the word “quiz”.

Another theory assumes that the concept of the Latin question “quis it?” (In German: “Who are you?”). The most common theory says that “Quiz” is an abbreviation of the English word “Question” (in German: “question”).
