The Election Commission has come into action mode after the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Commission has started preparing for the election of the new Vice President. The Commission said in a press release that the Election Commission of India has started preparations related to the 2025 Vice Presidential elections. The election schedule for the post of Vice President will be announced soon after the preparation activities are completed. Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on Monday citing health reasons. His resignation was accepted by President Draupadi Murmu on Tuesday.

A press release issued by the Election Commission said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has reported the resignation of India’s Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on 22 July 2025 through a notification. It said that the Election Commission has the right to hold the post of Vice President of India under Article 324. This election is conducted by the President and Vice President Election Act 1952 and the rules made under it (President and Vice President Election Rules 1974).
The Commission said that we have started preparations related to the Vice Presidential election 2025. The election schedule for the post of Vice President will be announced after the preparations are completed. The Commission said that the preparation of the electoral college, which includes elected and nominated members of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha has been started. Apart from this, the appointment of Returning Officer / Assistant Returning Officer is being finalized. The Commission said that information and records related to the former Vice President elections are being seen.
