Donald Trump Senior officials of India and the United States will start a three-day dialogue on the proposed bilateral trade agreement here on Wednesday amid threats to impose counter customs duty by the administration. An official gave this information on Tuesday. The US has come to India at this time with a team of Brandon Lynch authorities, assistant trade representatives for South and West Asia, to formally start negotiating on the agreement. Lynch will discuss with Additional Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal in the Department of Commerce.
The agreement will be fixed
The official said that the two sides would finalize the outline of the agreement, dialogue programs and terms of reference during their discussion. The agreement will be finalized in two phases and is expected to focus on issues related to goods trade in the first phase. India and the US are aiming to meet the first phase or part of the agreement by September-October this year. Usually in such trade agreements, the two countries make the import duty significantly or zero on the maximum (90–95 percent) products with bilateral trade. Apart from this, criteria are also made easier to promote business in services and promote investment.
Agreements with many countries
India have made such agreements with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Australia and European Free Trade Association (EFTA). While the US has demanded more market access to some industrial goods, vehicles, liquor and agriculture, India may consider the fee cut for labor-bound areas like textile. Lynch’s visit is taking place amid the announcement by US President Donald Trump to impose a counter custody on India. Trump has announced to impose this fee from April 2. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal visited Washington in early March amid Trump’s announcement. He interacted with US trade representative Jemisson Greer and US Commerce Minister Howard Lutnik.
