Viktor Orbán again blocks the unity of the EU heads of state on Ukraine. His demand: First a referendum on EU membership in your own country.

The Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has once again prevented a joint statement from all 27 heads of state and government of the EU. “Veto! Enough is enough,” Orbán wrote on Thursday in online service X after the publication of the other 26 heads of state and government on Ukraine. The Hungarian Prime Minister announced that the Hungarian people want to question Ukraine’s EU membership. “Until then, we cannot support a common point of view in this matter,” he emphasized.

Orbán is one of the last heads of government in Europe who, despite the Ukraine War, maintains good contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In the past, he had already blocked or delayed decisions from the EU on Ukraine.

In the summit declaration published without Hungary, the 26 heads of state and government confirm their support for Ukraine. In addition, they ask the Member States to immediately intensify the efforts to “cover the urgent military needs and need for defense in Ukraine”.

Reference is also made to the initiative of EU foreign officers Kaja Kallas, who is aiming for five billion euros for artillery ammunition for Ukraine for the current year. The European Union will “intensify its support for the reform efforts of Ukraine on its way to EU membership,” it said.
