According to Foreign Minister Marco Rubio, the United States could soon be a mediator between Russia and the Ukraine If there are no progress in the conversations about a possible peace solution. “We will not continue these efforts for weeks and months,” said Rubio before his departure from Paris to journalists. The US government has “other priorities” to which it wants to devote themselves in the event of lack of progress. In the French capital, the Foreign Minister had participated in a meeting with representatives of the EU and Ukraine.

Rubio indicated that a withdrawal of the United States as an intermediary would be possible in the coming days, there should be no clear signs that an agreement between Russia and Ukraine is possible. “We have to find out very quickly now – and I speak of days – whether this is feasible or not,” he said.

US President Donald Trump Rubio made it clear. If an agreement is not possible, he may say: “We’re done.” If it is serious with a peace both sides, then the United States is ready to help.

According to Rubio, the US government also relies on cooperation with the Europeans in the efforts. “We want you to continue to get involved,” he said. He found the ideas of European partners to be “very helpful and constructive”. In February, US government officials had excluded a participation of Europeans in negotiations on peace in Ukraine. French government officials were satisfied with the talks on Thursday in Paris. So far, neither the French government nor Ukraine or Germany and Great Britain, which were also represented with envoys, responded to the recent statements of Rubios.

Putin spokesman speaks of progress

Rubio did not make any direct allegations to one of the warring parties. Trump had repeatedly commented impatiently in the past few weeks with regard to his demand for a peace solution. In this context, he primarily criticized the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj and repeatedly threatened to stop the US support for his country. After the refusal of Russian President Vladimir Putin, one of the USA At the end of March, Trump was also “very annoyed” to agree to agree to agree on ceasefire agreement at the end of March and threatened consequences.

The Russian presidential office spokesman Dmitri Peskow did not want to comment on the question at a press conference on request whether the United States could actually withdraw from the talks. At the same time, Peskow spoke of progress on the way to a possible peace solution. He referred to the consent of Russia to a mutual suspension of the attacks on energy systems in the Ukraine secretary. Ukraine and Russia agreed under US mediation in March.

However, since then, both sides have regularly accused violations. In the past few days, Ukraine has again reported Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. The Russian UN ambassador Wassili Norsja described the agreement on Thursday (local time of New York) as failed and said that a comprehensive armistice was currently unrealistic.

Shortly before Rubio’s statements, there was an approach between the USA and Ukraine in the dispute over the raw material agreement required by Trump. On Thursday, both sides signed a declaration of intent for such a strategic partnership. According to a document published by the Ukrainian government, a finalization of the agreement for April 26 is planned. US Finance Minister Scott Bessent also called this appointment for the expected signing. “We are still working on the details,” he said. It is an approximately 80-page document.
