A tourist submarine sank on Thursday (27) in the Red Sea, near the Egyptian city of Hurghada, resulting in the death of six Russian tourists, according to local authorities and the Russian embassy in Egypt.
According to the embassy, the accident occurred around 10am, during a walk to observe the corals, about 1 km from the coast. In addition to the six fatalities, nine others were injured and 29 were rescued without injury. Among the passengers were 15 children, and the rescue teams were still working on site until the last update.
In a statement, the Russian Embassy confirmed that all onboard tourists were Russian citizens and reported that the submarine, called “Sindbad”, belonged to a homonymous hotel in the region. The company responsible for the vessel, Sindbad Submarines, highlights having two of the only 14 real recreational submarines in operation worldwide, capable of passengers to a depth of up to 25 meters to explore marine life.

So far information has not been disclosed about the possible causes of the wreck. The region, known for maritime tourism, has recorded similar accidents earlier. In November 2024, for example, a tourist yacht sank in the same area, leaving four dead.
In addition, the Red Sea region faces recent tensions due to conflicts involving attacks by the Houthis extremist group against commercial vessels, which led several tourist companies to reduce their activities at the site.
Local authorities are still investigating the case.
