The Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) significantly boosts the prize money for the winner. From now on, the world champion receives one million pounds, almost twice as much as last. There are also further changes to the World Cup.
The World Association PDC has doubled the prize money for the darts world champion. As the PDC confirmed after long speculation, the world champion will receive a million pounds (just under 1.2 million euros) in the coming year, Luke Littler had recently scored half of the sum for his title. A total of around seven million more will be distributed in the next season with more than £ 25 million.
In the same train, the PDC also announced the increase in the field of participants in the World Cup in Alexandra Palace in London to 128 players. So there will be more days when playing. This should breastfeed the high ticket demand. At the highlight of the year, which also represents the start of the new season, prize money is doubled to five million pounds compared to previous years.
“The prize money of one million pounds for the world champion reflects the position of darts as one of the most exciting and sought-after sports in the world,” said PDC managing director Matthew Porter: “The huge growth of PDC in recent years has lifted darts to an unprecedented level.”
Darts professionals can also earn significantly more at other events. At the World Matchplay and the Grand Slam, the most important tournaments of the PDC after the World Cup, one million pounds will be released in the future.
The greatest increase in prize in the 33-year PDC history is the consequence of the new contract with Sky UK. The Pay TV station had again secured the rights to most events at the beginning of the year. According to British media reports, Sky UK should pay around £ 125 million for the next five years.
