In an event that left the digital world in a state of shock, social media platforms Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and even Google experienced a significant outage. This unexpected glitch, which originated from Meta, the parent company of these platforms, resulted in users worldwide being unable to access these services for a considerable duration.
The outage began in the evening, with users reporting a variety of issues. These ranged from being unable to log in, being logged out unexpectedly, to pages failing to load on both Facebook and Instagram. The issue seemed to affect various Meta-owned platforms, including Instagram, with users encountering login problems and being told their passwords were incorrect.
Interestingly, the issues coincided with login problems on Google’s platform, suggesting a common cause between the outages at two tech conglomerates who largely control their own infrastructure. Google’s ads status page reported a disruption to the company’s Ad Manager.
Users took to Twitter to vent their frustration, sharing memes and using the hashtags #facebookdown and #instagramdown. Some users also joked about switching to other platforms, such as Snapchat, TikTok, or Telegram.
Meta’s business status page reported a number of disruptions, including “major disruptions” for the group’s admin center, as well as for Facebook login, the service which allows users to log in to third-party services using their Facebook details. Some Meta services, such as WhatsApp and the Facebook Ads Transparency page, were apparently still working.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus, said that the outage was caused by a configuration change that impacted users globally. The company apologized for the inconvenience and said that it quickly investigated and resolved the issue.
This outage serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that even the biggest tech giants face in maintaining seamless service. It also underscores the importance of having robust systems in place to quickly address such issues and minimize disruption for users.
