There is a tremendous increase in demand for wheelchair at major airports in India. Especially in the US and UK flights, every third passenger wheelchair assistance is demanding. However, some passengers behind this growing demand are the real need, some are incorrectly using it for avoiding long lines and early boarding. In such a situation, the government is preparing to revise the guidelines to prevent this misuse and ensure that the real needy people do not remain stuck.

Will have to pay fees

According to the report of Hindustan Times, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is currently finalizing a new structure, which is expected to be implemented by the end of May. Under the upcoming policy, free wheelchair servis can be limited to passengers aged 60 or above, while younger passengers may be required to show a valid medical certificate. At the same time, there is also a plan to charge a minor fee from passengers seeking the help of wheelchair to the boarding gate.

In fact, this proposal is being made after the increasing displeasure of passengers for wheelchair service.

Possible solutions/measures to prevent misuse-

  1. Age limit: There is also a suggestion to set an age limit for wheelchair assistance. Only 60 years or older people will automatically be eligible for free wheelchair facility.
  2. Medical proof: If younger passengers demand wheelchair assistance, the airlines can ask for medical documentation from them.
  3. Cart Service: Buggy or cart service can be started at the airports so that elderly passengers do not need to walk long distances.
  4. Paid assistance: A low -cost option can be offered for those that do not meet the criteria but they need wheelchairs.
  5. Responsibility of passengers- It is also the responsibility of the passengers to use wheelchair assistance properly. This facility is for those for whom it is difficult to walk at the airport, not for those who just want to avoid a quick boarding or immigration line.
