With a very simple trick, get more aroma out of your coffee beans: How to use physics for more enjoyment.

One or more cups of coffee in the morning are part of everyday life for most. However, many coffee lovers do not know that they can strengthen the aroma of their coffee with a simple trick – provided they freshly grind the coffee beans before preparing.

Scientists from the University of Oregon have found that electrostatic cargo is created by the friction and shredding of fresh coffee beans – the darker and drier the bean, the more the load. The consequences for the coffee are negative: the powder clumps, which makes it more difficult to extract the coffee evenly. According to the researchers, the electrostatic cargo hinders the wetting of the coffee powder through hot water, which releases fewer aroma substances.

The solution: lightly moisten the beans before you come to the coffee grinder. Important: Do not insert the beans and do not keep them under running water to avoid damage to the grinding: Already 20 microliters of water per gram of coffee beans – about half a milliliter for an espresso – are sufficient. For example, you can easily wet the beans with a spray bottle with water.

The advantage of this method lies in the more uniform extraction, which not only leads to a more intense taste. It also ensures that every espresso succeeds equally well.
