The US President repeatedly speaks of Canada to become part of the United States. The former German foreign minister is now making an unusual proposal.

Former Federal Foreign Minister and current chairman of the Atlantic Bridge, Sigmar Gabriel (SPD), has brought Kanada into conversation. “I would offer the Canadians to become a member of the European Union,” Gabriel told the Bremer “Weser-Kurier” (Saturday edition). A partial integration of the country into the EU may also be conceivable.

The background to US President Donald Trump, Canada, is the background to the United States. Trump also wants to annex Greenland. “Of course this does not go together, but you have to keep against it as Europe,” said Gabriel.

In response to the recently imposed tariffs, Gabriel recommended that Gabriel recommend himself, but at the same time to stay ready to talk: “I believe that all of this only plunges world trade into chaos and in the end does not help the USA. But probably the realities must first catch up with American politics before it will change.”

In security issues, the SPD man also recommends staying ready to talk to the United States. At the same time, the Bundeswehr must be able to defend territorial defense independently. “But we are at least ten years away.” Therefore, the United States continues: “I would therefore strongly advise not to make any active contributions to make America turning away from us,” continued Gabriel.
