Russia is ready for peace with Ukraine, but achieving its goals is its priority. This was stated by Kremlin spokesperson Dimitri Peskov on Sunday. The statement came at a time when US President Donald Trump has given Russia a 50 -day deadline to agree on the ceasefire, otherwise it would have to face more strict sanctions.
Peskov and other Russian officials have earlier rejected the allegations of Ukraine and Western countries that Russia is deliberately delaying peace talks. Meanwhile, Russia has intensified drone and missile attacks over the cities of Ukraine. Experts say that such attacks may increase further. Peskov said in a conversation with Russian government TV reporter Pavel Jarubin, President Putin has said many times before that he wants peace in Ukraine and the matter is resolved as soon as possible. But this is a long process, it needs hard work and it is not easy. He further said, the most important thing for us is to achieve our goals. Our goals are clear.

Russia says that any peace agreement can be done only when Ukraine retreats from the four areas that Russia illegally joined it in September 2022, but could not capture it completely. Furthermore, Russia wants Ukraine to leave its attempt to join NATO and limit the strength of his army. Ukraine and its western partners have rejected these demands.
On July 14, President Trump warned Russia that if there was no peace agreement in 50 days, the US would impose heavy tariffs (imports) on Russia. Trump also said that America will reinforce the process of sending weapons to Ukraine. Earlier, there have been several rounds of talks in Istanbul between Russia and Ukraine, in which some prisoners were swapped, but there was no concrete progress on the ceasefire.

Trump had said that if Russia would not agree, the US would target Russia’s business partners and isolate it globally. He also claimed that the European countries would now buy billions of dollars of weapons from the US, which would be sent to Ukraine, so that the arms reserves there can be replenished. The scheme also includes Patriot Air Defense System, which Ukraine is most needed, as it is struggling with Russian drones and missile attacks. Recently, the US commitment was suspected when the Pentagon temporarily stopped the supply sent to Ukraine due to a decrease in its arms reserves.
