Nintendo Switch 2 is downward compatible, but there are 171 switch games that do not run on it or cause problems

If you buy a Nintendo Switch 2, you can still play the game of the predecessor. The hybrid console is downwards and can continue to use both your old digital and physical games – at least mostly. A whole range of titles are currently not compatible.

You cannot play these switch games at first or only to a limited extent on the Switch 2

Nintendo has confirmed which switch games will cause problems on the Switch 2 when the new hybrid console appears on June 5, 2025. On the official Nintendo website there are two lists that list all affected titles and, after playing, with “Problems at Start on Switch 2” and “Compatibility Problems”.

This is not too surprising, after all, new hardware features can always cause problems. However, some are also quite big names on the list. The games that cannot be started at all include Fortnite, Dead by Daylight, Doom Eternal, Rocket League or Warframe.

So if you have these titles for the Nintendo Switch and want to play them on the Switch 2, you look into the tube for the time being. At least Fortnite gets a separate Switch 2 version.

On Nintendo’s official lists to the Starting problems and Compatibility problems There are a few more games that have only been published in Japan. We therefore leave you out in this list.

Unfortunately, Nintendo does not reveal how the problems look specific to the individual games. Nor do we know whether and when we can count on a fix for the games. So far, the respective entries in the lists only say “the problem is examined”.

But at least that gives hope that a solution can be found here and that we can soon gamble these switch games on the Switch 2.
