How many MPs gave notice in Parliament

145 MPs in the Lok Sabha have given notice to remove Justice Verma together. This includes the names of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, BJP’s Ravi Shankar Prasad and Anurag Thakur, KC Venugopal and KC Suresh of Congress, Supriya Sule of NCP-SP, TR Baloo of DMK, NK Premchandran of RSP and ET Mohammad Bashir of IUML.

63 MPs gave notice in Rajya Sabha

In the Rajya Sabha too, 63 MPs have given notice raising the same demand. Congress MP Syed Naseer Hussain said that the Aam Aadmi Party and opposition India alliance MPs have also signed this notice. He said that even though the Trinamool Congress MPs were not present on Monday, they are also together on the issue and will submit their signatures soon.

What is the constitutional process?

The process has been decided under Articles 124, 217 and 218 of the Constitution to remove the judge. Signatures of at least 100 MPs are required in the Lok Sabha and at least 50 MPs in Rajya Sabha. If both the Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman accept the notice, an inquiry committee is formed. The committee consists of a senior Supreme Court judge, current Chief Justice of a High Court and a noted law expert. This committee will submit the investigation report to Parliament within three months. Based on the report, there will be a discussion in Parliament and then the decision will be taken after the voting.

What are the allegations against Justice Yashwant Verma?

Recently, burnt notes were recovered from his residence in Delhi. Justice Verma has denied any wrongdoing. But the initial report of the inquiry committee said that the room where the cash was received had a direct or indirect control of the judge Yashwant Verma and his family. It is considered serious indiscipline.
