Ambassador Harish said, this is an important discussion. When 80 years of the United Nations are completing, it is a good time to consider how much has been achieved so far the idea of multilateralism and peaceful solution of disputes mentioned in the United Nations Charter. Also, it is time to understand what obstacles came in this path. In the first forty years after the establishment of the United Nations, colonialism came to an end and the Cold War went on. At that time the struggles could be stopped and handled to a great extent. The United Nations played an important role in these efforts. In fact, in the year 1988, the Nobel Peace Prize was also given to the United Nations Peace Sena. After the end of the Cold War, many new struggles started in different parts of the world. Along with this, the method of activities that maintains peace of the United Nations also changed.

He said, the nature of conflicts has also changed in the last few decades. Now the increasing number of non-state actors has come out of the government, which some countries sometimes use for their interests by supporting them. Along with this, money, weapons, training of terrorists and extremist ideology are spreading more rapidly with the help of modern digital and communication techniques. He said, what will be the future of the peace campaign of the United Nations – it is being discussed seriously. Also, the process of establishing peace is now gaining more importance. The role of regional organizations has also increased in this direction. For example, the African Union has properly participated in resolving the disputes between its member countries.

He said that there is a clear difference between India and Pakistan. India is on one side- a mature democracy, fast growing economy and inclusive society. Pakistan is on the other hand-immersed in bigotry and terrorism and repeatedly borrowing countries from IMF. He further pointed to Pakistan and said that when the Security Council discusses peace and security, it should adopt a policy of ‘zero tolerance’ towards terrorism. He said that if any member of the council preaches others, but indulges in unacceptable activities themselves, then it is double behavior.

India reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is its integral part and no question on its sovereignty can be accepted. At the same time, India clarified that the Indus Water Treaty is a bilateral agreement and before raising it on the international platform, Pakistan should resolve violations that it has done themselves.

This is not the first time Pakistan has tried to raise the issue of Kashmir on the international stage. But these efforts have not received much support. Most global powers consider it a bilateral case between India and Pakistan. India’s quiet, but strong response has further strengthened its image as a responsible democracy and a committed country to global peace, while Pakistan’s situation has once again emerged as a country to only divert attention.
