According to police, the helicopter had fallen into the river on Thursday for reasons that have so far been unexplained. According to information from the AP news agency, six people were killed. The BBC reported at least one dead. Details about injuries or deaths were initially not confirmed by the police.
The fire brigade said that a rescue operation was underway. Rescue boats circled the crash site. This was near the Holland tunnel in front of Manhattan.
