The central government has said that there is no intention or plan to consider removing the words ‘socialism’ and ‘secular’ from their constitution. The government said that no process has been started in this regard. The government gave this information in the Rajya Sabha. In response to a question, the Union Law Minister also said that the Supreme Court has also justified the 42nd Constitution Amendment.

MP Ramji Lal Suman in Rajya Sabha questioned in this regard. On which Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said in a written reply on Thursday that the official attitude of the government is that there is no plan or intention to reconsider or remove the words ‘socialism’ and ‘secular’ from the preamble of the Constitution. Any discussion regarding the amendments in the preamble will require intensive deliberations and widespread consent, but the government has not yet initiated any formal process to change these provisions.

Government said- Supreme Court has also given validity to amendment
The Union Minister said in response that ‘the Supreme Court has confirmed the validity of the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976, under which the words’ socialism’ and ‘secular’ were added to the Preamble of the Constitution. He said that ‘in November 2024, the Supreme Court of India’ Dr. In the case of Balram Singh and other vs. India Union and others, the petitions challenging the 1976 amendment (42nd Constitution Amendment) were rejected, and confirmed that Parliament also had the power to amend the preamble of the Constitution. Meghwal said in his reply, the Supreme Court has made it clear that socialism is a symbol of a welfare state in the context of India and does not hindered the development of the private sector, while secularism is an integral part of the basic structure of the Constitution. ”
The government said, ‘Due to the atmosphere created by the officials of some social organizations, it is possible that some groups are advocating to rethink these words. But such activities can create public discussion or atmosphere, but it is not necessary that it should be an official stand of the government.
