The dispute over the Freedom of the press in the USA continues. The US government now wants to proceed against a court decision, according to which the Associated Press (AP) news agency must be granted access to appointments by US President Donald Trump. The US’s office’s office announced on Wednesday that it had lodged a complaint with an appellate court in the capital Washington.
US federal judge Trevor McFadden had instructed the White House on Tuesday to give AP again access to the president’s appointments. The exclusion of the agency contradicts the first additional article on the US constitution of 1791, said the judge. The First Amendment guarantees freedom of expression and press in the United States.
Dispute over Golf of Mexico
The international agency AP excluded the White House two months ago because the agency had refused to rename the Gulf of Mexico into “Golf of America” and thus follow an order from Trump. Since then, both names have been seen on Google cards in the USA. AP, on the other hand, points out that the name Gulf of Mexico has existed for more than 400 years.
Trump’s name decree “only has justification within the United States”, it said in a stylistic note from the agency. As a global news agency that spreads news around the world, AP “must ensure that place names and geography are easily recognizable for all target groups”.
AP had sued the White House after the exclusion of its reporters and photographers on February 11th. A court had initially declared the exclusion permissible.
