Former RPF constable under surveillance due to serious mental illness, 4 people killed in moving train

Mumbai: The sacked RPF Constable Chetansingh Chaudhary, who was arrested for killing his senior and 3 passengers in a moving train in 2023 near Mumbai, Maharashtra’s capital, has been kept under surveillance for ‘Psychosis’. A hospital report has claimed that the former RPF worker is currently being treated at the Manic in Thane due to the disease. The court hearing the case had earlier sought a report on his situation from Thane Jail Management as the accused is in his custody. After this, the jail management presented a report released by the Health Review Board of the Manager at Thane.

‘Detailed report will be available only after one month’

The report released by the board said that the accused was brought to the hospital on 20 February and is ‘under surveillance due to psychosis’. The hospital said that he was admitted due to complaints of ‘unusual behavior’ and needs to be kept in the hospital for another month. The comment on the report states that ‘the patient is being treated and different types of tests are being done by the concerned doctors’. It said that a detailed report will be available only one month after investigation.

4 people killed on 31 July 2023

Chaudhary, 34, is accused of shooting his senior ASI Tikaram Meena and 3 passengers with his government weapon in the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express near Palghar on 31 July 2023. Chaudhary, who was trying to escape when the train stopped near the Meera Road station on the Mumbai suburban rail network after the chain was pulled by the passengers, was caught and the weapon was also recovered from him. The RPF constable has been in jail since then.

Cases were registered under IPC sections

Chaudhary was booked under sections of IPC, including 302 (murder), 153-A (promoting enmity between various groups on the basis of religion, caste, place, residence and language) as well as provisions of the Railway Act and Maharashtra Property Prevention Act. According to the police, the former RPF constable opened fire on his senior ASI Meena and a passenger in the ‘B-5’ compartment of the train. He then shot another passenger in a pantry car and another passenger in the S-6 compartment. (Language)
