Aldi ends his e-commerce project and focuses on the core business on site. Around 80 employees lose their job with the closure.

Aldi has decided to stop its e-commerce business for non-food articles. As the “Food Zeitung” (LZ) reports, Aldi and Aldi Süd will close their jointly operated online shop at the end of September 2025. The approximately 80 employees of Aldi E-Commerce GmbH will lose their jobs at the latest at the latest.

The online shop, which started in 2021, was the only joint project of the two sister companies. Both companies each held 50 percent of the e-commerce subsidiary. According to information from “LZ”, the discounter has decided against further investments in the digital business and instead wants to concentrate fully on his core business in the branches.

The strong international competition in online trading would have continuously needed high investments that Aldi should only have generated in stationary business, the report says. Amazon dominates the German online market with a share of around 60 percent, as the HDE online monitor shows.

The Aldi digital offer mainly includes non-food articles such as multimedia, home improvement needs and household goods. A few product categories – such as selected drugstore, coffee products, pet food and wine – were offered both online and in the branches.

From the beginning, the online shop was economically on shaky legs. In 2023, Aldi E-Commerce GmbH generated sales of 33.9 million euros and recorded a loss of 4.8 million euros. This was a significant improvement compared to the loss of over 9 million euros in the previous year, but apparently the responsible persons feared that they could no longer achieve sustainable profitability – although a small profit was expected for the first time.
