What is fuel switch locking system?

The system controls the fuel supply to the engine of the aircraft. If there is a disturbance in it, there may be a risk of the engine shutting down or stopping fuel supply. Therefore, the DGCA has taken it seriously. The DGCA has asked all the airlines to conduct technical checks and submit the report of all the aircraft of their Boeing 787 and 737 fleet. If a flight is found in an aircraft, it will have to be improved immediately, till then the aircraft will not be able to run for flight.

Connection of fuel switch to Ahmedabad aircraft accident

On June 12, the AAIB, investigating the Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad, in its preliminary report, has considered the problem in the fuel switch locking system of the aircraft as the main cause of the accident. Investigation of the black box of Air India aircraft revealed that in the last moments of the flight, the cockpit voice recorder revealed that one pilot asked the other why he shut down the fuel switch? To this the other pilot replied that he did not do so. Investigations revealed that the fuel switches were converted into cutoff immediately after the flying, which stopped the fuel supply in the aircraft engines. It was probably too late by the time the pilot fuel switch turned on. After the report, questions were raised about the fuel switch to Boeing’s aircraft and feared that fuel switches were closed due to technical fault.

Aaib mentioned FAA’s guidelines in 2018

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of Investigation (AAIB), in its preliminary report on the Ahmedabad aircraft accident, mentioned the guidelines issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2018, recommending checking fuel switch in several model aircraft of Boeing Company including 787. However, this recommendation was not mandatory. Investigation stated that the fuel switch locking was not investigated in the aircraft accident of Air India as the FAA guidelines were not mandatory.

Air India aircraft accident in Ahmedabad

Air India flight AI 171, which was going from Ahmedabad to London, collided with a building soon after flying. It killed 260 people, while only one person survived (the lands included land in the dead and 19 other citizens in the building). The dead include 169 Indian citizens, 53 British citizens (one survived), seven Portuguese and a Canadian citizen.
