Initial reports of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) have come to light regarding the Ahmedabad aircraft accident. According to the report, when the Boeing 787-8 aircraft (AI 171) of Air India started flying from Ahmedabad Airport on June 12, the fuel supply stopped only three seconds. After the takeoff, the aircraft crashed in Meghaninagar only 29 seconds as soon as the fuel supply of both engines closed.

According to the AAIB report, the fan speed of the engines started decreasing as soon as the fuel supply stopped at the time of takeoff. The aircraft flew with a weight of 213.4 tons began to come down before crossing the wall of the circumference of the airport. At present, the aircraft had 54,200 kg of fuel and the take-off weight was 2,13,401 kg, which was less than 2,18,183 kg. The report said that the aircraft achieved the maximum speed of 180 knots and at the same time the fuel cutoff switches of the two engines turned into cutoff by run. Both these switches had a difference of just 1 second.

What came to know from cockpit recording?

AAIB has also analyzed the cockpit voice recorder. In this, a pilot asks the other, “Why did you get a cutoff?” I did not. “It is expected that this cutoff happened due to automatic or technical disturbances, which is now being checked deeply.

Not only this, it was also told in the report that the pilots tried to resume both engines. The engine-1 began to resume and its speed began to be recovered, but the engine-2 could not catch enough speed despite repeated fuel reintrody.

No flaw was found in maintenance

AAIB also examined the maintenance records of the aircraft VT-ANB. It found that the throttle control module was replaced in 2019 and 2023, but it was not related to fuel cutoff. No complaint was filed after 2023 regarding fuel switch.

At present, AAIB has not issued any special warning for B787-8 or GE GENX-1B engine operators. The investigation is going on further and other technical documents are also being reviewed. Air India has issued a statement saying that they are fully cooperating with the investigating agencies and monitoring every information of the report.
