Islampur in Sangli district in Maharashtra has been renamed as Ishwarpur. The Maharashtra government on Friday announced that Islampur in Sangli district is being renamed as Ishwarpur. The announcement was held on the last day of the monsoon session in the state assembly. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal told the assembly that the decision was taken in the cabinet meeting held on Thursday. The state government will send the cabinet decision to the Center for approval.

This step has been taken by the Hinduist organization Shiv Pratishthan after the demand to change the name of Islampur to Ishwarpur by sending a memorandum to Sangli Collectorate. Sambhaji Bhide is the president of Shiva Pratishthan. His supporters say that they will not sit peacefully until this demand is met. A Shiv Sena leader from Islampur said that the demand to change the name has been pending since 1986.
