A high -level meeting of the Group of Friends (GOF) was held on Tuesday (local time) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In this meeting, the need to promote accountability for crimes against peace soldiers was emphasized. Speaking at the meeting, India’s permanent representative at the United Nations, Ambassador P. Harish said that peace soldiers have to work in very difficult situations in dangerous areas. But mostly those who attack peace soldiers are not punished. This encourages the attackers and damages the efforts of peace.

Emphasizing the need for accountability, Ambassador P. Harish said, ‘Therefore, accountability is a strategic requirement. According to the law, and that is why it provides protection to peacekeepers and they are able to do their work well. This is the responsibility of all of us. India’s permanent mission at the United Nations, New York, said in a statement, “This is not just a matter of justice, but the credibility and future of the entire United Nations rests on how serious we take the safety of peace soldiers.”

Representatives of 40 countries and UN officials discussed the meeting

In this meeting, representatives of about 40 countries and United Nations officials together discussed the subject. It was also revealed in the discussion that as the instability in the world is increasing, threats on peace soldiers are also increasing. There is a direct connection between attacks and non -punishment. Therefore, it was assumed that punishment is not only enough, but it is also necessary to prevent measures, better strategies and united political will of all countries.

182 Indian soldiers served and sacrificed their lives

This ‘Group of Friends’ began in December 2022 under the chairmanship of India. It is based on the United Nations Security Council proposal 2589, which talked about strict accountability of attacks on peace soldiers. India has so far sent peace soldiers (more than 3 lakh) of peace in almost all the Missions of the United Nations. 182 Indian peace soldiers have served and sacrificed their lives. India said that it would be committed to strict action against peace and attacks.
