The Ministry of External Affairs is dismissing more than 1,300 employees today. According to a senior official, the employees who are being removed include 1,107 public servants and 246 foreign service officers who were posted in domestic positions in the US. Notices of dismissal are being sent to these officers personally via email. Foreign Service officials will be sent on administrative leave for 120 days immediately, after which their services will be considered to be over. At the same time, the period of termination of service for civilian employees has been fixed at 60 days. The scheme has been appreciated by President Donald Trump, External Affairs Minister Marco Rubio and his Republican supporters. He says that this will make the department more agile, efficient and able to work. However, the current and former diplomats have criticized these cuttings, saying that this would weaken the US’s global impact and the ability to deal with emerging hazards.

Supreme Court also approved the trimming

Sorting in the federal government in the US was also challenged in the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court also gave a verdict in favor of continuing the layoffs. US State Ministry Deputy Secretary Michael Rigs said that employees who will be trimmed will be informed soon. It is not yet clear how many people from the Ministry of External Affairs will be removed from their jobs. In May, the Ministry of External Affairs informed the Congress about trimmed and reorganization. The Ministry of External Affairs also said that the programs which were being run by the previous government will be cut.

Critics said- this step will reduce American influence

Critics of the government’s move say that the proposed cuts will reduce US influence globally and will make it difficult for many ministries to meet their missions. The US State Ministry is planning to abolish some departments monitoring the US two -decade participation in Afghanistan, including an office working on the rehabilitation of Afghan citizens working with the US Army. Along with this, there are plans to abolish many programs promoting human rights and democracy along with refugees and immigration programs.

The US Foreign Services Association, which represents diplomats, urged the Ministry of External Affairs not to cut jobs last month. Union President Tom Yazdgeradi said that this will not only be trimmed by the employees, but also many posts will also be completely eliminated. With this step, disrupting foreign service can be endangered by national interests and Americans around the world will have to suffer its consequences.
