The Supreme Court is hearing the petitions filed by the Election Commission against the process of amending the voter list in Bihar. A bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia and Justice Joymala Bagchi on Wednesday also allowed petitions filed by social workers Arshad Ajmal and Rupesh Kumar.

Both activists said in their petition that this process weakens the principles of independent and fair elections and representative democracy by implementing arbitrary, inappropriate and inconsistent documentation requirements related to birth, residence and citizenship.

Many more petitions were also filed

Several new petitions, including opposition parties Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar), Shiv Sena (UBT), Samajwadi Party, JMM, CPI and CPI (ML) leaders, were filed in the apex court against the decision of the Election Commission to conduct SIR before the elections in Bihar. Apart from different petitions by RJD MP Manoj Jha and Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, KC Venugopal of Congress, Supriya Sule from Sharad Pawar NCP faction, D Raja from Indian Communist Party, Harinder Singh Malik from Samajwadi Party, Arvind Sawant from Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray) Supreme Court has moved.
