Around the Unlimited tariffs It had become quiet for a long time. The idea of a real, because untracked internet flat rate for the cell phone is still impressive, but many tariffs are quite expensive and at the same time the data volume of normal mobile phone tariffs is now so high that the surcharge for an unlimited tariff is not attractive for many. At the end of December 2024, 1 & 1 Unlimited tariffs introduced the market. Since then, prices have changed several times: in January it went up, then down again in February and finally high again in March – higher than before. After all, the tariffs were now given the addition “On Demand” and alternatively an XL variant without restrictions, which is then also more expensive. If you are interested in such a tariff, you should take a close look at the detailed conditions before booking. For whom the 1 & 1 Unlimited tariffs are worthwhile and what catches there is, Verd Bild reveals.

1 & 1: Book new unlimited tariffs

1 & 1 Unlimited tariffs: costs, monthly prices, details

The new Unlimited flat rates started in the first surcharge on December 23, 2024. All tariffs started with the Unlimited S with a maximum speed of at least 50 megabits including 5G, the higher variants M and L then scored with even more speed (100 and 300 MBPs). On January 15, 1 & 1 had drastically increased the S-tariff in the price and at the same time introduced a new XS cheap tariff without 5G below 10 euros. The U-turn followed on February 11: the XS tariff was deleted, the S-tariff fell again to just under 10 euros-including 5G. On March 14th there was a new tariff revision, this time with the honest addition “On Demand”. The XS tariff returned, but now despite a lack of 5G for just under 15 euros a month and the Unlimited S tariff suddenly costs just under 20 euros a month-twice as much as in the previous month and originally in December. Good to know: outside of the currently tiny independent 1 & 1 network Surf customers by National roaming in the Vodafone network – including 5G. The tariffs with a maximum speed (download) and regular monthly costs according to the status of March 14, 2025 (in the first few months there is still a discount when booking with a term):

  • 1 & 1 Unlimited XS on demand: up to 21.6 Mbps (only LTE) for 14.99 euros
  • 1 & 1 Unlimited S on demand: up to 50 Mbps incl. 5G for 19.99 euros
  • 1 & 1 Unlimited M on demand: up to 100 Mbps incl. 5G for 29.99 euros
  • 1 & 1 Unlimited L on demand: up to 300 Mbps incl. 5G for 39.99 euros
  • 1 & 1 Unlimited XL (real flat): up to 300 Mbps incl. 5G for 49.99 euros

The upload is 11.2 Mbps in the XS tariff, at 25 MBPs in the S-tariff, from the M-tariff at 50 Mbps. Optionally, the tariffs can also be booked in the bundle with suitable smartphones and other hardware. A telephone and SMS flat rate is included in all tariffs. Special feature: If you book the S tariff without a term, it is permanently more expensive, costs 12.99 euros instead of 9.99 euros per month.

Hook: ex works with hand brake

The new 1 & 1 Unlimited tariffs do not come without hooks. Because, as with the previous tariffs, you start with a preset throttling: In the basic setting, only 50 gigabytes (GB) of high-speed data volume are included in the basic setting, 75 GB at the M-Tariff 100 GB. After that, as with normal tariffs, the pace is reduced to 0.064 Mbps. So that the tariff can be used “Unlimited”, this handbrake must be solved again and again manually manually by re-booking high-speed packages in 1 GB steps in the customer center (1 & 1 control center) or by tapping the link in a note SMS. This is a clear one Worsening to the previous unlimited tariffs: There was 5 GB (instead of now 1 GB) with each re -booking. Without throttling you only get by in the XL tariff. Background for the restriction: 1 & 1 apparently wants to deter permanent power users and, above all, the use in a 5G router. Because according to a court ruling, providers may no longer fundamentally prohibit use in a router. The need for manual re-booking makes use as a DSL substitute impractical.

Unsuitable for video streaming in 4K

Annoying: For extensive film streaming in high quality, the 1 GB levels are a no-go. Netflix, for example, specifies data consumption of at least 7 GB for 4K films in high quality. In the worst case, a 90-minute film would have to be booked ten times high-speed volume. In practice, however, this will rarely arrive, because the amount of data when looking on the cell phone is usually significantly lower-unless you use the cell phone as a WLAN hotspot to play the 77-inch UHD TV in the apartment.

Multicard is possible

The use of several SIM cards per mobile phone contract is popular to use second cell phones, tablets or via ESIM also smartwatches in parallel to the main cell phone. Such additional cards are referred to as “Multisim” or 1 & 1 as “Multicard”. In many unlimited tariffs, multisims are very expensive or sometimes not possible. The reason: the provider concern that users, for example, to replace the DSL router in a 5G router like the AVM Fritzbox 6850 5G used (this is usually prohibited in the terms and conditions). Advantage with 1 & 1: Up to two multicards are possible, each additional SIM costs 3.99 euros a month. A multicard is already included in tariffs with a smartphone.

Conditions in the EU otherland

There are no unlimited flat rate in the EU, instead the EU prescribes a “fair-use” rule here, in which the high-speed data volume that can be used within the EU can be calculated according to the basic fee. 1 & 1 states to surpass this minimum amount. Within the EU, in Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, the following limits apply to high-speed data volume:

  • XS: 25 GB
  • S: 50 GB
  • M: 75 GB
  • L: 100 GB
  • XL: 150 g

Attention: According to the consumption of this amount, 1.55 euros per GB are calculated! Before costs arise, customers are warned by SMS in good time according to 1 & 1. And outside A data connection is only possible for the EU after a corresponding data package has been booked (or the internet access is expressly requested at the high standard costs).

1 & 1: Book new unlimited tariffs

Assessment: 1 & 1 Unlimited tariffs 2025

With its new Unlimited tariffs, 1 & 1 initially landed a real price cracker-even if the term “real flat rate” does not really fit thanks to the throttling that starts from 50 GB. Because especially for video streaming, the tariff is hardly suitable after exceeding the 50 GB threshold. In view of the monthly changes in condition, however, it seems clear: 1 & 1 uses unlimited tariffs as an action goods. Therefore, the rule applies: Before booking, you should read the product information sheet very precisely. If the actions are cheap, you have to strike immediately, the next day it could be more expensive again. If the Unlimited S tariff including 5G comes back for less than 10 euros a month, it is a real price tip despite the subsequent book angle. Incidentally, the following applies: real unlimited tariffs are not bargains.
