A resident told the online media outlet The Paper that the earthquake in Mangshi, about 100 kilometers (60 mi) north-east from Ruili, was so strong that people were not able to stand. A resident of Kunming, the provincial capital of Yunnan, told The Paper that his roof lamp was shaking wildly and the vibrations remained for more than 10 seconds.
