US President Donald Trump has direct talks between the United States and the Islamic Republic Iran
announced. “We will have a very big meeting on Saturday,” said Trump. The conversations would be held between the countries directly and “almost at the highest level”. Elsewhere, he said the talks were already underway. “Maybe there is an agreement, that would be great,” said Trump.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtschi confirmed the planned meeting, but said that it was indirect conversations that should take place in Oman. A high -ranking official in the country had previously commented. Araghtschi wrote on X that the planned meeting was “both an opportunity and a test”. The ball lies in the American field.
Oman maintains good relationships with both the USA as well as Iran and has long been a channel for news between the two hostile states. Iranian President Massud Peseschkian had also rejected direct discussions in the past.
The Iranian news station Nournews, which is affiliated to the country’s highest security authority, describes Trump’s announcement of a direct meeting as part of a “psychological operation”. The US President attempts to influence public opinion at home and abroad, he said.
Trump unilaterally terminated nuclear agreements in 2018
