The workers were taken to Puerta del Mar Hospital with burns and respiratory issues caused by smoke inhalation. Navantia has launched an investigation.
Two workers were injured following an explosion on Thursday aboard a ship undergoing repairs at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz, according to the Emergency Coordination Center (Cecem112) and Navantia sources. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on the cruise ship Oasis of the Seas, during refurbishment work being carried out by a company contracted by the shipowner.
After an alert call was received by the 061 Health Emergency Center, firefighters, local police, and the Civil Guard were dispatched. Medical sources attended to two workers, aged 34 and 27, who suffered burns (one on the face and the other on the hand), with the older worker also experiencing smoke inhalation. Both were transferred to Puerta del Mar Hospital.
The explosion occurred in a room on the 16th deck during welding work by a subcontracted company. According to preliminary data gathered by Navantia, a small explosion caused minor burns to two employees of the company.
The fire was quickly extinguished after the incident. The shipowner requested ambulance services, and the 112 emergency protocol was immediately activated, mobilizing firefighting vehicles from the Provincial Firefighters’ Consortium, along with state security forces and Navantia’s emergency teams. Two Critical and Emergency Care Units (DCCU), one from Cádiz and another from San Fernando, also responded.
Navantia has already begun an investigation to determine the cause of the incident, emphasizing that it affected a company not directly involved in the shipyard’s work.
Police sources confirmed that the cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, is currently under repair at the Navantia shipyard in Cádiz. The Labor Risk Prevention Center and Labor Inspection authorities have been notified.
