This Wednesday began the Public Exequias of Pope Francis with a solemn ceremony that marked the beginning of three days of recollection and prayer. The coffin of the Pontiff, who died Monday at age 88 due to an stroke, was transferred from the residence of the Santa Marta house to the Basilica of San Pedro.
Cardinal Kevin Joseph Farrell, Camarlengo of the Catholic Church, presided over the initial prayer before the coffin begins its route. The procession passed through the Plaza de Santa Marta and the Plaza de los Protomártirtartes Romanos, before reaching the Plaza de San Pedro.
The entrance to the Vatican was made by the central door of the Basilica, where the Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops And members of the Pontifical Chapel accompanied the coffin, all dressed in choral habit, in a solemn act that reaffirms respect and devotion to Pope Francis.

Once in the Basilica of San Pedro, The Pope’s body was deposited at the altar of the confessionn, located under the famous Bernini Baldaquino, a place of deep symbolism.
The Word liturgy began the ceremonies, marking the official beginning of public tributes that will extend to the Friday. During these three days, the temple will remain open until midnight on Wednesday and Thursday, providing the faithful to approach the coffin and take his last goodbye to a Pope who has left an indelible mark on the history of the Church.
On Friday, The funeral will come to an end with the culmination of public tributes. A multitude of faithful, dignitaries and heads of state are expected to meet to attend the funeral of one of the most influential pontiffs of the modern era.
