In Lower Saxony, the risk of forest fires increases due to the beautiful weather. Which regions are currently at risk.
A lot of sunshine, no rain: Because of the long -lasting beautiful weather, the risk of forest fire has increased in the north and east of Germany. This also affects parts of Lower Saxony. For the regions north of the Hanover region, the forest fire threat index of the German Weather Service is currently indicated (as of March 22, 2025) Level 4 of 5. This means that for the Nienburger Land, the Lüneburg Heath and the Ostheide currently have a high risk of forest fires.
The forest fire center in Lüneburg is therefore prepared. From danger level 3 of 5, it is occupied by specially trained foresters from the Lower Saxony State Forest. The north-east of Lower Saxony has reached a large area level 3 since March 6, says head Knut Siek in an interview with the dpa news agency. “This is very early, we were surprised.” But you are well prepared. The areas around Celle, Faßberg, Bergen and Lüchow are particularly in view.
But the south and west of Lower Saxony are also at risk. Level 3 applies there on Saturday. Due to the climate catastrophe, it can also hit the resin. There are currently still dead plant residues from the previous year. Soil fire can quickly ignite, then the dead vegetation would become a fire burden.
From Sunday to Wednesday, the situation in Lower Saxony should relax. Then, according to the DWD, in the north of level 4, it goes down to level 3, later in parts to 2 and 1.
There are a total of five forest fire hazard levels (very low danger to very high danger). At the highest level, individual forest areas can be blocked. The forest fire monitoring season lasts from the beginning of March to the end of October.
