After 18 years in professional football, Mats Hummels gave up the tunnels in summer. One of the best German players in recent history says goodbye to the big stage. Reason enough to look back on the most beautiful moments of an impressive career.
/20 On May 19, 2007, Mats Hummels sniffed Bundesliga air for the first time. Ottmar Hitzfeld brings the then 18-year-old central defender into play for Martín Demichelis in the 52nd minute. Over the course of his career, Hummels should be able to book a total of 441 further missions in Germany’s highest division. © MIS/Imago
/20 In the summer of 2009, the German U21 national team was able to crown the kings of Europe. With a team around Mats Hummels, but also Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng, Benedikt Höwedes, Sami Khedira and Mesut Özil, the DFB selection against England impressively won 4-0. © Gribaudi/ImagePephoto/Imago

/20 On the last matchday of the 2010/11 season, Hummels was able to stretch the master shell for the first time in his career. After leaving FC Bayern in January 2008 to join Borussia Dortmund, the black yellow could not be stopped under Jürgen Klopp this season. © Sven Simon/Imago
/20 In the following season, the Dortmund joined the success of the past year and even went one step further: with defense chief Mats Hummels, the BVB again won the championship and served FC Bayern 5-2 in the DFB Cup final. 6/20 The Champions League season 2012/13 should become a wild roller coaster ride of feelings for everyone who kept it with black and yellow. In the quarter -finals against Malaga, BVB was 1-2 behind until the end of the regular season. Hummels initiates the attack in minute 90+1, Neven Subotic lends across and Marco Reus dusts to 2: 2. But due to the then valid away goal control, the Dortmunders needed another goal. And Felipe Santana delivered this – barely a minute later. 7/20 In the semifinals, superstar Cristiano Ronaldo and Real Madrid are waiting for BVB. But Robert Lewandowski provides the Dortmund with a gala performance and four goals in the first leg a comfortable starting situation for the second leg in Bernabeu. The Borussians travel to Madrid with a 4-1 lead. Real hits twice in the second leg and BVB is still trembling in the last minutes of the game, but the final whistle finally releases the Dortmund. Hummels is in his first Champions League final. In the final in Wembley, BVB is the better team over long distances of the game, but in the end you have to give up Bayern 1: 2. © Sven Simon/Imago

/20 In summer 2016 Hummels finally returned to FC Bayern. Back to his youth club, this time with the ambitions to establish themselves as a regular player. He should also succeed. 11/20 In March 2017, Mats Hummels will make headlines in the league encounter against Frankfurt Eintracht. At 0: 0 SGE striker Branimir Hrgota played around Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and ran towards the empty goal. But Hummels comes from behind and prevents the already safe Frankfurt tour with the “most beautiful tackle of the season”, as the Spiegel later titles. © Jan Huebner/Imago
/20 The title for the defender should also not be missing from the record champions. In his three seasons in Munich, Hummels cheered at the end of every season with the master shell from the town hall balcony to the Bayern fans. The title race in the 2018/19 season was as scarce as it was no longer. After nine points behind BVB, the championship was only decided to win the championship with a win on the last match day. This should also be the last beer shower for the central defender. © Actionpictures/Imago
/20 With a 3-0 win over RB Leipzig in the DFB Cup final 2019, Hummels finally said goodbye from Säbener Straße. With the double in his luggage, he pulled back to the yellow wall, back to Dortmund. © Contrast/Imago
/20 Back in Dortmund, Hummel’s hunger for title was still not gone and BVB in 2021 celebrated another final victory in the DFB Cup under the Berlin night sky with the then interim coach Edin Terzić. © Laci Perenyi/Imago
/20 Despite knee problems, Hummels will be on the pitch on the 9th matchday against Arminia Bielefeld. However, the Dortmund is not noticed by any pain and meets the edge of the box after corner kick per volley. Dream goal – and that from a central defender. 16/20 At the Champions League game against Atlético Madrid on April 4, 2024, Hummels is already in focus before kick-off. The reason: it is his 500th competitive game for BVB. He is only the second player after Michael Zorc, who was able to crack this brand for Dortmund and is said to be honored accordingly on the Madrid lawn. © Jan Huebner/Imago
/20 In late autumn of his career, Hummels and his BVB make it again into the semi -finals of the Champions League. The opponent: Paris Saint Germain. The Dortmunders were rarely able to convince really playfully this season, but still fought themselves past some top opponents in the premier class. And against PSG, BVB also surprisingly won 1-0 both and second leg and solved the final ticket. Hummels was voted “Man of the Match” in both games. In the final, however, the Borussians against Real Madrid pulled the shorter. © Eibner/Imago

/20 In the course of his strong performance in his last BVB year, Hummels was even nominated for the choice of Ballon D’Or. Ultimately, he landed in 29th place. © Nurphoto/Imago
/20 In the summer of 2024 Hummels signed at AS Rome. Its time in the Italian capital can best be described as chaotic. Several change of coaches on one side and fluctuating performance of the central defender on the other. The Europa League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur is symbolized. Shortly after kick -off, Hummels fault a penalty that leads to 1-0 for the English. But in added time he makes his mistake well again and hits the 2-2 final score. © Insidfoto/Imago
