The death of football icon Diego Maradona employs the judiciary: seven doctors and nurses are on trial in Argentina for manslaughter. They are said to have treated the world champion in 1986 incorrectly. Forensicists announce the results of the autopsy.
In the process of the death of football icon Diego Maradona in 2020, the result of the autopsy was announced for the first time. The Argentinian had passed through a pain that had up to twelve hours of death and had water accumulation in many organs such as abdomen and lungs, said two coroners who had carried out the autopsy at the time. The cause of death was therefore acute lung edema in heart failure and dilatative cardiomyopathy, i.e. a heart muscle disease, as media reported.
More than four years after the death of Maradona, seven doctors and nurses are on trial. They are accused of homicide, they reject the allegations. According to the investigators, massive mistakes were made in the home care of the world champion in 1986, which was difficult to health.

Before the forensics made their statements as witnesses, those present were warned of the strong pictures that would be shown. Maradona’s daughter Jana then left the room. The Argentine idol died on November 25, 2020 in a private residential complex north of Buenos Aires at the age of 60. A few weeks earlier, he had undergone brain surgery.
Maradona’s death was neither suddenly nor unexpected, the forensicist Carlos Mauricio Cassinelli said in court, among other things, according to the Argentinian newspaper “La Nación”. His heart was fat and weighed twice a normal heart. A total of 4.5 liters of water would have accumulated in various organs. The water accumulation in the organs had started several days earlier. Maradona was not a patient who should have been treated in home care.
The public prosecutor accuses Maradona’s loyalty Leopoldo Luque, his psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov as well as a psychologist, another doctor, the medical coordinator of health insurance and two carers. In the event of a conviction, they face imprisonment of up to 25 years.
The process started a good two weeks ago. The start had previously been postponed twice because a number of legal questions were still open. The procedure should now take at least until mid -July, a total of 192 witnesses were invited. The trial of another nurse was separated from the main procedure. The nurse has to answer to a jury in the second half of the year.
