As a Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff is one of the best-known personalities of Formula 1. But his wife is also a celebrity in racing.
Formula 1 is still a men’s sport in 2025. All 20 drivers? Men. All 10 team bosses? Men. But alongside one of the best -known men of sport is a woman who is trying to change that.
Since 2013, Toto Wolff has been at the head of the Mercedes racing team in Formula 1. Between 2014 and 2021 he won eight design titles and seven driver world championships in a row. He is one of the most successful team bosses in the history of Formula 1.
Always by his side: his wife Susie – and she also wrote history. Susie Wolff also has racing in her blood, because her parents already had a motorcycle shop.
The Scottish started her own racing career at the age of eight in karting. In 2001, at the age of 18, Wolff rose into the Renault formula and drove there for the first time in a Formula racing car. After three years there, she took the next step into Formula 3 in 2005, where she only spent a year.
She subsequently spent the longest of her active career in the German racing series DTM, where she was active between 2006 and 2012. At that time she also met Toto Wolff. The couple went out of relationship after only eight months and married in 2011 on the Italian island of Capri.
In terms of sport, Wolff was drawn to Formula 1 shortly afterwards. There she became a test driver at the Williams racing team in 2012 and in 2014 the opportunity to go into the history of sport. At the Grand Britain’s Grand Prix in Silverstone, she completed one of the free training sessions for Williams and thus became the first woman in 22 years to actively participate in a Formula 1 racing weekend.
Within the next two years, Wolff completed a few more test drives and training sessions for Williams before announcing the end of her active career in November 2015.
Since then, Wolff has been committed to ensuring that drivers will continue to play a leading role in Formula 1 in the future. After her resignation, she founded the “Dare to Be Different” initiative, which works for a higher proportion of women in motorsport. Between 2018 and 2022 she was also the team leader of a Formula E team. Since 2023 she has been Managing Director of the F1 Academy-a youth series exclusively for women who are supposed to make racing drivers make their way into Formula 1.
Toto Wolff is extremely proud of his wife. In an interview with ESPN, the Mercedes team boss and a former racing driver admitted that his wife was definitely the better driver. “I am proud of that. She is one of the fastest women in racing and she is now leading the F1 Academy brilliant. This is something where I am very proud of her as a husband.”
Together the couple had to endure a lot. The International Automobile Association FIA 2023 suddenly initiated investigations against Susie Wolff. The accusation: As a member of the Formula 1 management (in her role at the F1 Academy), she passed on confidential information to her husband. However, the accusation was probably only based on a single media report, so that the investigation was set again after only two days. Susie Wolff also resisted the resulting damage.
Soon she could be responsible for the FIA. According to rumors, she should strive for a candidacy for the FIA presidency against incumbent Mohammed bin Sulayem. The elections are due in December 2025.
