Zverev played for a long time with pneumonia

After winning the Laver Cup, professional tennis player Alexander Zverev is taking a break and canceling the tournament in Beijing. The tennis professional has been plagued by health problems for some time – now he knows the reason for them. However, he still hopes to return to the tour soon.

Tennis professional Alexander Zverev has to miss the tournament in Beijing due to pneumonia. After winning the Laver Cup in Berlin last weekend, the world number two is giving himself and his body a longer break. “Unfortunately I was diagnosed with pneumonia, which explains the difficulties I have had physically in the last few months,” said Zverev. “I have to take care of my health first in order to be able to compete again as quickly as possible.”

At the 500 event in the Chinese capital, the 27-year-old would have been in second place behind the Italian Jannik Sinner. “I am very disappointed that I had to withdraw from the China Open. I will miss my Chinese fans in Beijing and hope to be able to play in front of them again soon,” Zverev continued.

Start in the Davis Cup still open

At the Laver Cup in Berlin the previous week, the world number two once again complained of fever and cough. Health setbacks have been causing problems for the Hamburg native all season. Zverev also recently complained that the tournament calendar was far too full and the season was therefore too long.

The German hopes to be able to play the Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai from October 2nd to 13th as planned. Zverev then has the events in Vienna and Paris on the agenda before going to the ATP finals for the best eight players in Turin.

Zverev’s start at the Davis Cup finals in Málaga at the end of November is also still open. Team boss Michael Kohlmann initially did not nominate Zverev, but left a fifth place in the team free in order to be able to nominate the Olympic champion in Tokyo.
