The Ukrainian President Selenskyj is concerned about another Russian push. He warns of a real World War II.
Kiev – The youngest Russian attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy in the middle of the debate about peace talks has triggered great outrage in the international community. The incident once again showed that a peace between Ukraine and Russia is still a long way off. On the contrary, the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj even warns of World War II.
World War II risk in Ukraine: Selenskyj with a dark warning
Selenskyj told the US broadcaster CBS Newsyou have to remain steadfast. “If we don’t stay steadfast, Putin will continue to progress,” said the Ukrainian head of state. It is by no means “empty speculation”. But: “The threat is real.”
According to him, there is a very special calculation of the Kremlin behind the Ukraine War, before which has been warned again and again since February 2022. “Putin’s ultimate goal is to revive the Russian empire and to recapture areas that are currently under the protection of NATO,” emphasized Selenskyj. Again and again it is also from the West that Putin will very likely be targeted in the event of a success in Ukraine and the Baltic countries.
Selenskyj warned: “Given all of this, I believe that the situation for a world war could escalate. There will be no safe place for nobody.” A Russian attack on NATO territory would activate the so-called assistant clause Article 5. Means: An attack on the NATO members on the eastern flank would be like an attack on the entire alliance. The remaining NATO countries would then be obliged to help.
Selenskyj appeals to Trump: “Then you see what Putin did”
It is uncertain whether US President Donald Trump would also see himself. Because he does not represent a particularly positive attitude towards NATO and the European allies in the alliance anyway. Trump’s customs policy is only the last link of a chain of transatlantic tensions.
Selenskyj asked Trump CBS News to visit Ukraine so that he can “understand what is going on here”. He said: “We respect your position. But please come before you make decisions or plan negotiations and see the people, civilians, warriors, hospitals, churches and the dead children.”
Only then can you formulate a plan for an end to the war, says Selenskyj. Only then will Trump see and understand what Putin did and with whom the US would get involved in a deal.
