On vacation, it is easier for many people to flirt and get involved in others. Can that even result in a permanent relationship?
A trip not only means new experiences, foreign cultures and exciting adventures – sometimes it also brings love with it. This is shown by a current survey by Meininger Hotels, carried out by the market research institute Appinio. Accordingly, more than a quarter of the respondents (26.2 percent) have already fallen in love on vacation. For almost a quarter of it (24.8 percent) it was even great love. And even if not every romance led to the altar, at least 16.4 percent stated that a long -term relationship arose from her vacation flirt. Another 45.8 percent report on a shorter liaison.
If there are romantic encounters when traveling, then according to the survey, often directly in the accommodation. Almost 40 percent of those surveyed (39.8 percent) stated that they could fall in love on vacation. The reasons for this are the relaxed atmosphere, the openness to new experiences and getting to know like -minded people.
Especially in the common areas of a hotel or hostel, the chances of a flirt seem to be high: more than a quarter (25.6 percent), the holiday romance has started in public areas such as the lounge, breakfast room or in other community zones of accommodation.
If you want to find great love when traveling, you seem to have particularly good chances by the sea. Almost half of the respondents (46.2 percent) who fell in love on vacation got to know the partner during a beach vacation. City trips follow in second place with 21.8 percent. Adventure and active vacations also have erotic potential- at least 9.2 percent found their love luck there.
On the other hand, less promising for love seem to be business trips (3.8 percent), cruises (3.4 percent) or longer stays abroad such as Work & Travel (3.1 percent).
The first palpitations often do not long for it: 71.8 percent of those surveyed fell in love with the first few days of vacation, 20.6 percent even on arrival – be it on the plane or on the train.
But what about the future of such vacation romances? Opinions differ: While 25.3 percent of those surveyed do not believe that a love has existed from vacation, 23.5 percent they consider them future -proof. In the end, love always remains unpredictable – and maybe the greatest adventure of a trip.
If you are planning a romantic surprise on Valentine’s Day, you should quickly book a ticket to Paris. With 32.3 percent, the French capital leads the ranking of the most popular destinations for the day of love. Venice (20.1 percent) and Rome (19.9 percent) are also popular destinations for a romantic short trip.
The study commissioned by Meininger Hotels was carried out nationally from 2nd to 7th January 2025 by means of the Appinio panel nationally representative of 1,000 people. The romantic experiences of the participants were examined on various trips, from short and city trips to longer vacation, regardless of whether they were undertaken for private or professional reasons.
