Seoul: North Korea has recently sent additional soldiers to Russia to assist in war against Ukraine. Following this development, a top Russian security officer has now reached North Korea. The Russian government news agency TASS dues that Russia’s Security Council Secretary Sergei Shigi has reached Pyongyang, the capital of North Korea and will meet top North Korea’s top officials including Kim Jong Un. Information about what will be discussed with Shigu Kim has not been given. North Korea’s official Korean Central News Agency has confirmed the arrival of a Russian delegation led by Shoigu, but has not explained the purpose of their visit.

North Korea is helping Russia

According to intelligence officials from the US, South Korea and Ukraine, North Korea is providing a huge amount of traditional weapons to Russia and last year it also sent around 10,000 to 12,000 soldiers to Russia. In late February, South Korean spy agency said North Korea had sent additional soldiers to Russia. The South Korean media has described the number of North Korean soldiers recently sent to around 1,000 to 3,000.

South Korea, the US and other countries suspect that North Korea is getting economic and military assistance from Russia in exchange for providing weapons and soldiers. Many experts say that North Korea will increase its support to Russia to get as much profit as possible from Russia before the war ends.

Kim can visit Russia

Some observers say Shigu’s visit may be related to Kim’s possible Russia visit. In June 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Pyongyang and signed a major mutual defense treaty with Kim. At that time, Putin invited Kim to come to Moscow. It is believed that Kim may also visit Russia soon.
