Bungie gives a deep insight into the “Marathon” extraction shooter. Also on board are individual runner classes, a faction system and dynamic missions on Tau Ceti IV.

More than two decades after the last publication of a “marathon” title, Bungie continues to develop the series as an extraction shooter. The reinterpretation again plays on Tau Ceti IV – a dilapidated colony with dark secrets.

Players take on the role of cybernetic mercenaries and embark on risky missions in teams of three-with the aim of recovering valuable equipment and escaping alive. In addition to the team game, a solo game option is also available.

Runner: classes and individual playing style

The focus of “Marathon” lies on the so -called running. They are people who have transferred their awareness into biosynthetic bodies. These cybernetic covers have specific skills and values that are divided into four classes that have been confirmed so far.

A total of six classes should be available at the start, two of which have not yet been unveiled.

Confirmed Runner classes:

  • Locus: A kind of fronts soldier that is suitable for an aggressive style of play and control of the battlefield, but has weaknesses on the defensive.
  • Blackbird: Enlightenment with sensors for fine -tacing and supporting the team through strategic information.
  • Glitch: Fast saboterin with a focus on mobility, change of position and unrest in the opposing team.
  • Void: Carnage expert with active camouflage and smoke grenades. Use confusion and fast withdrawal as a game principle-i.e. hit-and-run tactics.

The classes can be individually developed by prey from missions. Implants, equipment upgrades and prestige items allow the style of play to adapt to personal preferences.

“There are also rare items that really shift borders, prestige cores, for example. Glitch has one who upgrades her double jump to the triple leap, which significantly expands the mobility in the air,” said Kevin Yanes, Senior Design Lead behind “Marathon”.

Bungie emphasizes that every runner class differs not only in appearance and skills, but also in play pace and tactical role.

Fractions, rewards and progress

In addition to the individual development of the runner, the faction system in “Marathon” plays a major role. Runner can join various factions that support you with mission bonuses, among other things. Even after a failed commitment, players do not remain: Runner equips groups with basic equipment and motivate them to quickly return to the game.

This mechanics of “Marathon” ensures that the risk of permanent equipment is cushioned by a motivating progression. At the same time, the game principle of an extraction shooter remains with high risk: Those who die lose their equipment, whoever survives, keep the prey.

Functions of the faction system:

  • Equipment sponsorships: Runners provide political groups after losses.
  • Call system: Increased reputation within a faction leads to better rewards, exclusive objects and bonuses.
  • Long -term binding: The choice of a faction influences the development of the character across many missions.

So far, Bungie has revealed six factions: Cyberacme, Arachne, Sekiguchi, Mida, Traxus and Nucal. It is also worth mentioning: Certain parliamentary contracts are linked to individual cards. This system is intended to prevent the game from permanently concentrated on a few preferred cards and others get into the background.

There are three maps for the launch

Knowledge of the specific conditions and structures of the locations on Tau Ceti IV will make a significant contribution to the success of a crew.

Two cards are available for the upcoming alpha test of “Marathon”:

  • Perimeter: A forested area that is designed for missions with five crews (up to 15 players).
  • Dire Marsh: A more spacious battlefield that can record six crews (up to 18 players) at the same time.

The card is also becoming the official launch of “Marathon” in September “Outpost” Contained – an area with a cramped room layout that is supposed to enable intense battles on close terrain.

Another card on the UESC marathon ship Playing is currently being developed and is to be delivered as part of a later update. Bungie promises a completely different gaming experience with “raid -like mechanisms”.

Solo players are also addressed

In addition to the cooperative game with up to three players per team, “Marathon” also supports solo games and duos. For this purpose, the automatic refill must be deactivated during matchmaking.

The game world is expanded by dynamic weather effects, changing mission conditions and seasonal content. The Live service model Provides community events, ranking lists and story-based updates. The season is reset every three months. New seasons bring zone updates, runner, weapons, events and story highlights.

Bungie relies on close cooperation with the community in the development of “Marathon”. Early prototypes have already been tested, player feedback flowed directly into the game design. The focus is ultimately due to fairness and predictable strategy. The long -term goal: a game world that not only tells stories, but also developed by the players themselves.

“Marathon” appears on September 23, 2025 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC. A closed alpha test is planned before publication. However, participating players must sign an NDA.
