Alexander Zverev wants to get his confidence back in his adopted home Monte -Carlo – but has to cope with the next deep blow. Against Matteo Berrettini, Zverev experiences a bitter bankruptcy after the set lead and flies from the tournament after the first game.
Alexander Zverev tore off the hair band from the head, grabbed his bag and then disappeared down from Court Rainier III in Monte-Carlo: Germany’s tennis star experienced the next bitter disappointment in his adopted start in his adopted home and slides deeper and deeper into the crisis.
Despite a strong start, the world ranking second in the ATP Masters on the Mediterranean coast already lost its opening match against the former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettin from Italy with 6: 2, 3: 6, 5: 7 and was unable to overcome its departure depth for weeks when he returned to his favorite covering.
After about two and a half hours, Berrettini converted his first match ball and gave the top seeded Zverev a sensitive mood damper – since his final defeat at the Australian Open against Jannik Sinner, Zverev in vain is looking for the way out of a sporty crisis. Two semi-finals (2018 and 2021) remain his best result in Monte-Carlo, where he has lived for many years.
Zverev’s plan does not work
Due to the defeat, the 27-year-old also has no chance of replacing Sinner until his return to the tour (from May 4) at the head of the world rankings. Zverev had hoped for an upswing at the start of the European clay court season and even received support from Boris Becker in preparation for the third masters of the year, who visited him three times during training.
In the principality, it is “most important for him that I win tennis matches and get my confidence back,” said Zverev in the run -up to the tournament. However, this step did not go against Berrettini.
Zverev got into the game on the Court Rainier III and immediately breaks the Italian, the native of Hamburg moved well and played powerfully. After 38 minutes, Zverev Satz one secured. The second round was more balanced, Zverev gave up his service game to 2: 4 – and was forced into the third set. There Berrettini kept the better nerves in the crucial moments, got a break twice with the loud support of the fans – and plunged the German number one into the next low.
Up to the French Open (May 25th to June 6th), Zverev still has enough time to find its shape – but the last few weeks give little reason for hope. The next stop of the Hamburg native is the ATP tournament in Munich, which he was able to win in 2017 and 2018.
