The German ice hockey star Leon Draisaitl won the award for the first time as the best scorer of the North American professional league NHL. With 52 goals, the professional of the Edmonton Oilers was the first German to take the coveted Maurice Richard Trophy and thus achieved another career milestone at the end of the main round.
Although Draisaitl played only 71 of possible 82 games after two injuries in the end of the season, he scored seven goals more than the second -placed William Nylander from the Toronto Maple Leafs. With such few main rounds, 29 years ago with Mario Lemieux, a professional had ended up in first place on the scorer list.
In the 2019/20 season, Draisaitl, as the top scorer, had already received the Art Ross Trophy and the most valuable player who received the Hart Trophy and the Ted Lindsay Award. He was already the second best scorer of an NHL season twice. His personal record is 55 goals.
As in the previous year, the top scorer of the season was Nikita Kutscherow from the Tampa Bay Lightning with 121 scorer points. Draisaitl ended the season in the statistics in third place with 106 scorer points in his 71 games.
Goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets, the best team in the main round, won the William M. Jennings Trophy for very few goals. It is also the favorite for the award as the best goalkeeper and the most valuable player of the season.
