(CNN) – Millions of people, from the Florida coast to the Blue Ridge Mountains, are suffering the consequences of Hurricane Helene. The storm made landfall on September 26 in the Big Bend area of ​​Florida as a Category 4 hurricane, the strongest recorded in the area.
As one of the largest storms the Gulf of Mexico has seen in the last century, Helene left a 500-mile path of destruction with catastrophic flooding, damaging winds and power outages. Local authorities have reported more than 200 deaths in six states and fear that number could rise. North Carolina has been particularly hard hit, with telecommunications disrupted and hundreds of roads closed.
