In an interview, Shuhei Yoshida, former head of the Playstation Studios, spoke about the development of “God of War”. In the conversation, Yoshida revealed why the title published in 2018 initially left him in horror and required a shift.
With the 2018 published “God of War” The Sony Santa Monica Studios played a new direction in a playful way and released at the time one of the best titles of the year.
Like Shuhei Yoshida, former head of the Playstation Studios, in an interview, the signs were not successful from the start. According to his own statements, Yoshida played a building of around 80 percent six months before the planned release, which was startled by “God of War”, which frightened it in several areas.
The result: “God of War” was postponed by half a year. The Sony Santa Monica Studios should use the additional development time to fix various defects. “I was horrified”, Yoshida told Game File. “However, I didn’t say that the game is terrible.”
Yoshida speaks of playful and technical defects
Yoshida described the development at the time as follows: “At that time it was one of the biggest games that were under development. The company had huge expectations and the presentation was a fantastic announcement at the time. It was six months before the planned launch in 2017. I visited the studio and Cory Barlog presented it and let me play.”
Yoshida continued: “The game was perhaps 80 percent ready. But I really had difficulty playing this one level that I wanted Cory to play it. The enemy was behind the camera and shot at me. I really felt cheated. And there were some frame rate problems and many things didn’t work.”
Yoshida quickly realized that those responsible for Sony were in a Zwickmühle. “When I thought of the remaining time of the team and the expectations of the company and maybe even the player, I realized that we have a problem,” said Yoshida.
“But because Cory is so creative, nice and passionate, I couldn’t tell him. Although my facial expression probably revealed me.”
Shifting was the right decision
After playing “God of War” in detail, Yoshida realized that the team needed a little more development time. So the adventure of Kratos and ATREUS was postponed by half a year.
The right decision, as we know today. “After the meeting I went back to the (Executive Producer) Shannon Studstill and said to Shannon: We have a problem,” Yoshida looked back.
“And finally we were able to move the game. The publication was originally planned for October of the same year. We postponed it to April of the next year. So it was six months. This really helped the team to perfect everything,” said Yoshida.
“God of War” was released in April 2018 for the PS4. At the beginning of 2022, implementation for the PC also followed.
