Worries cloud Ulm’s victory, Fortuna scores decisively again late on

At the start of the 7th matchday of the 2nd Bundesliga, Fortuna Düsseldorf celebrated an important victory. As in the previous week, the league leaders scored decisively late on. In the basement duel, promoted Ulm gets three points – and has to digest a shock.

Greuther Fürth – Fortuna Düsseldorf 1:2 (1:1)

Fortuna Düsseldorf has ended its dismal streak at SpVgg Greuther Fürth and, at least for the time being, extended its lead in the 2nd Bundesliga. Coach Daniel Thioune’s team, which continued to be flawless on a foreign pitch, won 2-1 (1-1) against the Franconians and used a late penalty to win.

For Düsseldorf, this ended a negative run of eight defeats in Fürth. The pursuers Karlsruher SC, 1. FC Magdeburg and SC Paderborn could follow suit later on the seventh matchday.

Isak Johannesson (90+1) converted a controversial penalty into the winning goal. Giovanni Haag (43′) had previously given Düsseldorf the lead in Fürth on Friday evening, but then a defensive error favored Dennis Srbeny’s quick equalizer (45′). A little later, Fürth’s sports director Rachid Azzouzi had to go to the stands with yellow and red – he was loudly upset about a free kick whistle.

The Düsseldorf team, who avoided a derby defeat against 1. FC Köln last weekend with a goal in stoppage time, got off to a brave start. David Kownacki (16th) and Jona Niemiec (26th) missed the first opportunities, then Fürth also had good chances through Noel Futkeu (37th) and Branimir Hrgota (40th). Haag and Srbeny scored before the break.

In the second half, the teams largely neutralized each other – until Nicolas Gavory (72nd) missed the huge opportunity to make it 2-1 for Düsseldorf. The full-back had already circled around Fürth’s goalkeeper Nahuel Noll, but then failed to hit the empty goal. As against Cologne, Düsseldorf celebrated a late goal.

SSV Ulm – Eintracht Braunschweig 3:1 (2:0)

Newly promoted SSV Ulm celebrated its second win in a row with a 3-1 (2-0) win against Eintracht Braunschweig and gained some breathing room in the bottom half of the table. However, the relief was also mixed with concern for regular goalkeeper Christian Ortag, who may have been seriously injured and was carried off the field on a stretcher.

Romario Rösch (14th) took advantage of a failed Braunschweig clearance attempt to take the lead, and Maurice Krattenmacher increased the lead to 2-0 in the 39th minute against the weakest defense in the league. Shortly after the break, Braunschweig’s Sven Köhler (50th) was sent off with a yellow-red card after repeated foul play. Felix Higl countered Eintracht’s goal from Levente Szabo (76th), when they were outnumbered, to make it 3-1 with a penalty kick (84th).

Both teams celebrated their first wins of the season last week. For the SSV, this success was special in two senses: with the 3-1 away win at SV Elversberg, the Ulm team won a second division game again after 23 years.

The game between the promoted team and Braunschweig, who were already in danger of relegation last season, was initially characterized by many inaccuracies. SSV scored with their first shot on goal. Krattenmacher brought the ball just in front of the baseline in the middle of the box. There the ball bounced off a defender into the back area, where Rösch placed it centrally in the empty goal. Nothing happened for a long time until the hosts struck coldly on a counterattack.

There was a downer in the second half on Ulm’s side: SSV keeper Christian Ortag was carried off the pitch on a stretcher after he fell while intercepting a cross and possibly sustained an injury to his cervical vertebrae. Niclas Thiede made his second division debut for him. 15 minutes were added because of the long break, but after Ulm’s third goal, the Braunschweig team didn’t have much to counter it.
